Stretching across northern Australia, tropical savanna grasslands are among the country’s most expansive and productive ecosystems.

Dominated by native grasses and dotted with scattered trees, these open landscapes provide food and shelter for a remarkable diversity of wildlife. Seasonal rains trigger an explosion of growth, supporting everything from insects and frogs to reptiles, birds and mammals, while also providing hunting grounds for birds of prey.

At AWC’s The Plains Wildlife Sanctuary, on Northern Kaanju, Wik, Wik Way and Central West Wik Country, these vast grasslands play a vital role in sustaining the rich biodiversity of Cape York.
